Burberry
Burberry was established in 1856 by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry, who opened his first store in Basingstoke, England, eventually opening a shop in the Haymarket, London in 1891. Burberry focused on outdoors attire, and is credited with inventing gabardine fabric and using it in the development of trench coats for soldiers. The nova check was originally used as a lining but after a shop manager showed coats with the lining facing outwards, customers clamored for the pattern, prompting the company to manufacture umbrellas and cashmere scarves featuring the tartan. Modern Burberry is now a fashion company with a strong heritage in its famous trench coats, quilted jackets, cardigans and hats. Since 2001, creative directors have included Christopher Bailey and Riccardo Tisci, and most recently, Daniel Lee.
