New to VSP: rare editions of Hermès' iconic Kelly & Birkin handbags.

The Kelly may be the most classic of classic bags, but that doesn’t mean Hermès doesn’t have an experimental, playful side. Jean-Paul Gaultier served as creative director of the brand from 2003 - 2010 (after Martin Margiela) and released new versions of their iconic bags throughout his time there.

 

 

The Kelly Flat was first seen on the Spring 2007 runway and was designed to be completely foldable, collapsible and easily transported–a genius way to play with Hermès’ history of producing travel goods. It differs from other Kelly bags in that it features a buckle and strap (rather than a turnlock) to accommodate its collapsible nature. The bag became a favourite of then-first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy who was often photographed with hers.

The Kelly Flat is no longer in production, which now makes it a rare and unusual bag for the collectors market.

 

“Dalmatian White & Black Birkin 35”, Leather Bag 

 

 

Hermès’ Dalmatian bags, as they are known, are made of buffalo leather, a thick skin with heavily textured grain and a slouchy feel. Around the early 2000’s the brand developed a double dyeing process that created a contrast spotted effect (black, orange, red or green against white, with bag interiors that match the spots). The skins were used on a few different bag styles including the Birkin, Kelly, and Evelyne. Hermès produced Dalmatian bags until 2008 and thus, they are now sought after by collectors looking for truly rare pieces.
